Oh boy, where to start? Toree Saturn. Yeah, it’s from those creative minds at Diplodocus Games and Siactro. Just saying, if speed-based 3D platformers are your jam, you’ll probably want to buckle up and see what this one’s all about. Toree’s back in action. Think of it as the spicy sequel, like when your favorite band drops an album with that one track that gets stuck in your head inexplicably. The soundtrack? Legends and echoes of the late 90s and those weird Y2K vibes. Seriously, if nostalgia had a playlist, this game got it covered.
I can’t exactly pin down why, but there’s this story mode where Toree – let’s call him the good bird – squares off against Hawkee, the not-so-good bird. They’re bopping around to beats and levels where you’re running, jumping, probably missing a star or three because, distractions. My bad on that, I guess. Real talk, those stars and other collectible knick-knacks along the way? Total mood. I mean, who am I kidding thinking I’d 100% this game without losing track of time (or stars)?
Now, Toree’s moves! Like, picture this. Running like an accidental speedster using the left analog stick, throwing in some jumps with A and B buttons. Oh, and there’s this homing dash thing? Hits stars, lifts you high or speeds you up—depends on the star’s mood, I suppose. Ground smash with ZR? Absolute chaos and yet somehow terrific for a quick descent. Boom, fast lane.
Let’s pause a sec and talk visuals. They really leaned into this retro aesthetic, almost as if the SEGA Saturn itself whispered sweet inspirations into the game designers’ ears. It’s out now on the Nintendo Switch with a $4.99 tag hanging on it. So, affordable chaos awaits, eh?
There’s something chaotic yet thrilling about maneuvering Toree through the game’s landscapes. It’s like a dance but with, you know, hopefully fewer missteps. Even when I’m stumbling through levels, dodging challenges, or, let’s face it, running head-first into them. But maybe that’s just part of the experience.
Heads up though, this review comes from a Nintendo Switch version gifted by Diplodocus Games. Not gonna lie, every spin, jump, or soundtrack beat had me nostalgic and kinda spinning back to the olden days. Or was it just yesterday’s playlist? Who knows…
