Alright, so there I was, wandering around ChinaJoy in Shanghai – you know, just another expo day. And bam, right in front of me, GPD is flaunting their shiny new toy: the AMD Strix Halo-powered handheld console. Crazy stuff, right? I mean, they teased us in July, and now it’s on display with all the bells and whistles. Some dude named Jobs_Bao took the Win 5 for a spin – running benchmarks and gushing over it on Bilibili. Cinebench R23, Time Spy, you name it, he did it.
And get this, the handheld hit 30,495 points on Cinebench. I’m not a numbers person, but I know enough to say that’s bonkers close to the desktop-class Intel Core i9-13900HX. It was running hot at 80.3 degrees Celsius, full speed ahead. Weirdly, the top vents didn’t even touch 45 degrees. And oh boy, those fans – buzzing at 95dB, but hey, who cares if it’s like playing next to a jet engine when you’re having fun, right?
Oh, and about graphics, Jobs_Bao hit 9,680 on Time Spy. Almost kissing the RTX 4060 high score. But GPD thought, “Hmm, let’s cut the power to 70 watts,” instead of letting the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 truly go wild. Sure, it’s a bit of a buzzkill, but hey, it can still run stuff at Ultra settings on 1080p. And PureDIY? Yeah, they got Black Myth: Wukong running at over 80 FPS. Who’d have thought?
Let’s chat about the battery real quick. It’s got this 5,170mAh thing going on. But here’s the kicker – it’s not even in the console. You can yank it off and put it back like swapping socks. Some folks found it odd. I mean, carrying 340 grams extra isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But come on, it’s like having a pocket-sized backup energy bar.
There’re two versions of this beast. Top-tier has the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395, Radeon 8060S, with memory soaring up to 128GB. Then there’s the chill budget one with the Ryzen AI Max 385 and Radeon 8050S. No clue on prices. They’re keeping that secret, I guess.
And if you’re still with me here, keep an eye on Tom’s Hardware for the latest news blasts. They’ve got you covered. Catch you later!
