Okay, so, Microsoft just kind of gave up on its WMR headsets when Windows 11 came out last year. They just tossed them aside like that leftover pizza in the fridge you forget about until it grows legs. But! Here’s where it gets interesting — some genius named Matthieu Bucchianeri is cooking up something called ‘Oasis’. It’s basically a way to patch things up with SteamVR, which sounds like a fancy way of saying he’s trying to get these things to work again, somehow.
So, Bucchianeri says it might drop on August 29th. That is, if Valve gives it a thumbs-up — because who doesn’t love waiting on someone else to say yes? Typical.
What’s the deal with Oasis, you ask? Well, it’s supposed to support all that 6DoF tracking jazz and those motion controllers — all the fun stuff, I guess. But here’s the catch: it’s only for those with Nvidia graphics. AMD users? Nope. Apparently, AMD has this thing about ignoring third-party stuff, which sounds like classic tech drama if you ask me.
Anyway, Bucchianeri has already thrown in the towel on trying to get AMD to play ball. Dead in the water, he calls it. I’m imagining a boat with one oar. Or maybe no oar. Who knows.
Oh, and here’s some backstory: last October, Windows 11 just obliterated the WMR platform like it’s nobody’s business. Poof. Gone. All those headsets from Acer, Asus, Dell, and others just left out in the cold. Sad, right?
Interesting tidbit — and maybe why this guy Bucchianeri is so into it — he used to work on Microsoft’s mixed reality team. But now he messes around with firmware over at Xbox. Oasis is his little side hustle.
He swears he’s not breaking any old employee rules. It’s like he’s found this little loophole playground: no toes stepped on, all playtime. Gotta admire that kind of dedication. Or maybe it’s just stubbornness. You pick.
