Kraven the Hunter’s Director Encourages Audiences to Set Aside Recent Sony Spider-Man Critiques and “Give Our Film a Chance”

Sony’s attempts at a Spider-Verse without Spider-Man haven’t exactly hit the mark, but the director of Kraven the Hunter hopes you’ll give his movie a chance.

We all know the drill by now: Venom, Morbius, Madame Web. They share a few things: all tie back to Spider-Man, all come out of Sony’s studios, and frankly, haven’t set the world on fire. While Venom has a kind of charmingly bad appeal, let’s be real, they’re not blockbusters. J.C. Chandor, the director of the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, is also aware of this less than stellar track record. And yet, he asks fans to hold off on passing judgment until they see what his film brings to the table. In a chat with ComicBook, Chandor admitted the past entries haven’t wowed audiences but still hopes you might give his project a watch.

“I don’t want to dive too deep into it, but here’s what I’ll say,” Chandor stated. “As a filmmaker, my main focus, especially given the past few years where you guys have been deeply involved in this realm, is acknowledging that some decisions in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe didn’t sit well with fans,” he elaborated.

“We’ve had some films that have become huge hits, and others…not so much. It’s been a real mixed bag. But we need to ask for your support, to look past previous disappointments, and give our movie a shot,” Chandor urged. He seems to stretch the facts a bit here, as those so-called successes are primarily the Venom films, thanks to Venom being a more beloved figure compared to Morbius or Madame Web. So, let’s say the track record’s a bit rosier in his version of events.

Chandor is optimistic, saying, “Fans will see that we’ve poured our hearts into crafting an engaging story. Once the credits roll, there’s space for exciting expansions. My main aim was to keep this film standalone, protect its essence, and focus on telling a really gripping tale. And if all goes well, there will be room for some thrilling developments.”

What exciting developments might those be? Your guess is as good as mine, but it seems like they hinge on the film’s performance. So, fingers crossed it does well enough.
