Being a Fallout fan… oh man, it’s like juggling with one hand tied behind your back sometimes. Fallout 76, yeah, it’s gotten way better, gotta admit. And the TV show? A surprise hit! Season 2’s coming at us in December, can’t wait. But dude, where’s our next single-player RPG fix? It’s been since Fallout 4, like a literal decade ago! And Fallout 5? Forget about it, they’re busy with The Elder Scrolls 6 first. We might be old by the time Fallout 5 drops. Or maybe that’s just my pessimism talking. Who knows.
Right, but here’s the thing. There’s that silver lining, you know? The modders. I can’t even tell you how many cool projects they’re cooking up. One that grabbed my attention is Fallout London. But get this — over the weekend, a trailer for another mod practically slapped me in the face. It’s so darn cool, I had to share. People are calling it Fallout: Bakersfield.
So yeah, Fallout: Bakersfield! Wild stuff. It’s like taking Fallout, throwing it into a blender with the first DOOM, and—boom! You’ve got a total conversion mod. They took Fallout’s original isometric style and made it an FPS. How crazy is that? Anyway—wait, I digress—those details that I’m probably underselling? Just watch the trailer. It’s like they tried to cram a blockbuster movie into a few minutes.
Bakersfield, as in that dusty part of California. Necropolis to the hardcore fans. The “City of the Dead,” where ghouls hang out. Vault 13’s your starting point, and there’s Harry the super mutant… anyway, whether you’re playing as the hero or some scout, who even knows. I mean, the details are cool but slightly murky. Again, go see the trailer.
The gameplay? It’s this mash-up of RPG elements with DOOM’s run-and-gun style. They’ve got this UI thing happening—kind of a hybrid of both games’ visuals. Talking about graphics, it’s got that retro pixel-y vibe, with just the right amount of blood and guts. It makes you feel all nostalgic, like putting on your favorite old jacket. Does that even make sense? The “2.5D” thing really does the trick.
Weapons, they’ve got ‘em all — the 10mm SMG, Flamer, Plasma Pistol, you name it. There’s some destruction—like you can break stuff around you, which is oddly satisfying. Some dialogue too, think Fallout 1 chit-chat but you’re also itching to pull the trigger. Conflicted much?
Animations are as quirky as they come, very limited-frame but that weirdly adds charm. Also, they lifted some crunchy sound effects straight from the first Fallout. Talk about attention to detail. Kudos to the sound team, wherever they are.
A quick screenshot from the trailer, I swear it’s like seeing an old friend. The super mutant Harry is there doing his thing. Credit to the guys called the Fallout: Bakersfield Team. They’re the masterminds.
Seriously, I’m hyped for this mod. Blows my mind how it’s still in progress. They’re 60% there, whatever that means for creatures, environments, and all that jazz. It’ll drop when it drops, I guess.
Two dudes are running this show, Alexander “Red888Guns” and Denis Berezin. They got a Boosty page — $2.66/month if you wanna support them. Not that they’re in it for money. No ads, no monetization, nada. It’s all about the love, isn’t it? But I might toss some change their way. Projects like these bring fresh air when the big dogs are catching their breath.
And there you go. My brain dump of Fallout: Bakersfield. Keep an eye on it, or don’t, but I think it’s gonna turn some heads. Mods like these remind us why we love gaming, don’t they?
