So, Sucker Punch Productions, right? They spilled some juicy stuff about this new PlayStation 5 game, Ghost of Yōtei, during Sony’s whole Yōtei State of Play thing on Thursday. Yeah, we got to peek at Atsu’s weapons and her journey across Ezo—wherever that is. I mean, maybe it’s just north of somewhere. Also, they’re bringing back some old presentation vibes.
Ghost of Tsushima had this Kurosawa Mode—which was like a big nod to the legend Akira Kurosawa. You know, the guy behind classics like Seven Samurai and Yojimbo. Anyway, it’s back for Ghost of Yōtei, complete with that old-school black-and-white vibe, gritty film texture, and Japanese dialogue to boot.
And then there’s this fresh style, Takashi Miike Mode. Apparently, it zooms in close—like too-close-for-comfort close—and it’s all about the blood and mud. Miike’s that director dude who did 13 Assassins in 2013, a film that crossed over a bit into the West. But wait—there’s more! They’ve teamed up with the Samurai Champloo director, Shinichirō Watanabe, for a mode blasting lo-fi beats during exploration and combat. Like, who wouldn’t want some chill tunes while slicing through enemies?
So Thursday’s showcase, yeah, it threw out new toys—dual katanas, ōdachi, kusarigama. And Atsu? She can switch them up during a fight. Oh, and she can disarm foes or, plot twist, get disarmed herself. They’re throwing out serious exploration vibes—like, if you see something cool off in the distance, you gotta check it out. Elden Ring who?
Oh, and then they wrapped up with a look at these limited edition consoles and controllers. The consoles flaunt Mount Yōtei, and the controllers? They’re all about Atsu.
Just to clarify, Ghost of Yōtei isn’t a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima—it’s more like a distant cousin. Taking place 300 years later and somewhere else in Japan, the story tracks Atsu’s revenge quest against a group called the Yōtei Six. It’s all very, “get ’em in any order you fancy,” which seems kinda neat. She’s racking up her Ghost persona and a body count. Seems like choices matter more in this one.
So there you have it. Maybe I missed something—or got sidetracked. Who knows. Whatever, it’s all part of the charm, right?
