After experiencing the outstanding Silent Hill 2 remake by Bloober Team, I feel confident in their ability to deliver stellar horror games. Their upcoming project, Cronos: The New Dawn, looks impressive and seems to channel some intense Dead Space vibes with its gore and atmosphere.
Directors Wojciech Piejko and Jacek Zięba have openly shared their inspirations for this sci-fi survival horror game. Drawing from classics like John Carpenter’s The Thing, the mysterious German series Dark, and Terry Gilliam’s mind-bending 12 Monkeys, they’ve woven an intriguing tapestry, along with influences from games such as Dead Space and Dark Souls. Fans of Dead Space will recognize familiar elements like nightmarish mutated enemies, an over-the-shoulder shooting angle, and a unique limb-severing mechanic. However, Bloober Team promises a fresh twist on this feature, setting it apart from what Visceral Games delivered.
In a recent developer diary, released after the cinematic reveal trailer for Cronos: The New Dawn last October, Piejko and Zięba offered a glimpse of the gameplay. They delve into the role of the protagonist, known as the Traveller. This character, akin to a time-diving deep-sea explorer, ventures into the remnants of human civilization to rescue survivors. Cronos is set in a fascinating alternate-reality world devastated by an event called the Change, a catastrophe that, in the game’s lore, upended our world during the 1980s.
With their prior work on games like Observer and The Medium, Piejko and Zięba bring a wealth of experience in combining sci-fi with psychological horror. Cronos: The New Dawn marks a new chapter for Bloober, introducing an original concept while they also collaborate with Konami on future projects.
